The most important events

1919
The Government approved the first Czechoslovak Code on Public Libraries.

July 22, 1919
The Town Council decided to establish a public library in Piešťany when it decided to put aside 60 Hellers from the town budget for every resident a year and to build the library in foreseeable time. In six years of intensive work, they managed to put together 37 153 Czechoslovak Crowns.

Autumn 1925
The Piešťany Town Public Library was opened in the new building of the T. G. Masaryk State Townsmen School (the Pierre de Coubertin Grammar School in present). The first Library Committee was composed from the Town Council members: Anton Fuksa, Félix Weinberger and Geyza Novotný. We can learn from the archive records the Town Library was getting bigger by every year, the number of readers and borrowed books was steadily and quickly rising – and that was reason for the Library being moved several times to larger and more suitable premises. 

1929
The Library is being moved to the newly built Town Council building (The Town Hall today). In the 30´s, the librarian position was filled in by one librarian, Rudolf Gloss, a teacher. Later, one additional helper was assigned to him. The costs of running the Library, filling up the Library book collection and the payments to the librarian and its helper were furnished by the town.

1937
The Library is being moved to the premises of the former Klenoty Shop at the Freedom Plaza (Námestie slobody).

1951
The Library is being moved again to the Spa Hall (Kursalon) under the name the County Public Library.

1954
The Library is moved to the former Slávia Hotel in Winter Street. Its books were divided into belles letters, education and foreign languages sections. The latter was originally and directly from the Witner family estate and represented immense enrichment of the Library. The then librarian, Ján Schneider, is credited with the Library development and overall professionalization.   

1957
Mária Miezgová is becoming the County Public Library Director. The chronicle states that readers´ discussions and literature evenings became new methods of spreading the enlightenment and education introduced by the Director.

1960
As the result of the new territorial division of Slovakia, Piešťany ceases to be the County seat, and that is the reason for the Library to change its name into the Town Public Library.

1975
A separate Children Department was created in the former St. Josef ´s Pharmacy.

1982
Margita Knapová was assigned the Director’s position. 

April 7, 1988
The ceremonial opening of the newly built library constructed according to the project by Ing. arch. Bohuslav Pernecký and Ing. arch. Marianna Bogyová. The Library left the more than modest premises in Winterova Street which couldn’t meet the requirements of the time and the ever growing number of readers; it had moved into the new and professionally built cultural shrine that didn’t have any match at that time.   

January 1, 1989
The Library was renamed the Town Library according to its new Covenant.

1990
Ing. Margita Galová becomes its new Director.

1993
The Playroom for Impaired and Handicapped Children with the barrier free Access was opened.

1999
The Internet Centrum was accessed to the public. The beginning of the basic library service automatization. 

2001
Introduction of the automatized system of borrowing and accessing the on-line catalogues in the Children and Youth Department. 

2003
Introduction of the automatized system of borrowing and accessing the on-line catalogues in the Adult Department. 

2003
The Piešťany Information Centre opening

2005
The Computer Room for Handicapped and Socially Deprived was accessed to the public. In the numbers - at the Library beginnings, the number of registered books was 550 per 10 000 Piešťany residents; in 2005, when the Library disseminates information and education on varied media, 91 780 library units is registered for 30 463 town inhabitants.

Today
The Town Library is partner library to the Office of the Slovak Republic National Council; it is the member library of the Slovak Librarian Guild and the Slovak Libraries Association.
