Let’s Read

Our activities / Festivals / Let’s Read

The Piešťany Town Library, as part of its activities promoting reading, regularly takes part in the largest children’s reading marathon, which, since 2008, has been organized annually by the Children’s Hotline (Linka detskej istoty) at SV UNICEF in cooperation with libraries and schools throughout Slovakia. The reading takes place simultaneously in the library and at elementary schools throughout the town and every year well-known figures from society (writers, actors, and important local figures) join in to help kick-off the reading marathon.
The aim of the project “Let’s Read” is to involve the largest possible number of children in an activity, which, in recent years, has been overshadowed by modern, technical equipment such as computers, televisions, and mobile phones. Part of every reading marathon, is the attempt to break the previous year’s record and get written up in the Slovak Book of Records. The goal of setting a record is an attempt to involve the greatest number of children simultaneously reading throughout several Slovak towns. In such a way the organizers of the project try to motivate children to read books as well as to regularly visit the library and, at the same time, highlight the importance of literature for children readers.
Since its inception, the project’s “godmother” has been Mrs. Oľga Feldeková.
